I'm using Garmin's Road Trip software for the Mac that has allowed me to go in and map a long distance bike ride in Maine. The route looks perfect in the Road Trip software, the route follows the roads I want.
When I export to my Garmin device the route no longer follows the roads as I set it up in Road Trip. I started with a GPS file from Adventure Cycling and adjusted it to my liking by moving the route with the selection tool. This seemed to work well in the software but on the Garmin the route doesn't follow the intricacies of the road any more, it just connects (what look like) random points a long the route while maintaining some of the route characteristics. I know this may be difficult to help with, but any assistance would be welcomed.
What map do you have loaded on your Vista? If it's not City Navigator then the routing will not work. Roadtrip just sends the list of waypoints you created. It's up the your GPS and its map to figure out the best way between each waypoint. That requires a map which can do routing.
The US Topo map is not routable for example. Now if you're sure that you do have the correct map on the GPS, the other thing which could cause this would be if routing was set to 'off road'. That will have the same effect of just connecting waypoints with straight lines. Choose one of the other options, like 'faster' or 'shortest'. On my 60csx I would press menu menu setup routing to change this.
If you don't think there is a point, then maybe it's not a good tool for you. But really the problem lies in the definition of a 'route'. Garmin (and other companies) feel that it is a collection of a minimum of two waypoints (beginning and end) with the option for additional points in between. You seem to feel that it should be the entire set of turn-by-turn directions to get between the points. That's just not how it works.
The Garmin Vista HCx, brings a high sensitive receiver to Garmin's popular line of eTrex handheld units. It features a small GPS receiver and navigator with a color screen you can hold right in your hand. The Vista HCx is modeled after the original eTrex Vista, the color Vista C and the Vista Cx, which brought expandable memory to the eTrex series. Has anyone successfully connected a Garmin eTrex Legend GPS unit to a Mac Mini? It only comes with a serial port connector cable. I bought a serial port to USB adapter, but have had absolutely no luck getting my Mac Mini to recognize the GPS.
Roadtrip does what it claims and allows you to transfer routes. The rest is done by the GPS. In other words RoadTrip exports the entire route, turns and all. Why doesn't the GPS use it?
Smartphones and Tablets Use and on your iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch. Exchange Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks with MacGPS Pro. USGlobalSat USB navigation software connects your Mac to most USGlobalSat Global Positioning System receivers without displays. The real-time NMEA data from the USGlobalSat receiver is displayed on a moving map on your Mac screen, along with MacGPS Pro generated waypoints, routes and track logs.
Model Required PowerPC Driver Required Intel Driver Bluetooth and Other navigation software enables you to transfer and view real-time data with almost any GPS receiver provided it has standard NMEA output, and connects either through a serial port (requiring a Keyspan USB-to-serial adapter) or Bluetooth. IOS-only Bluetooth receivers such as the Garmin GLO are not supported. Garmin connects your Mac to many older Garmin handheld and fixed-mount GPS receivers with displays for upload and download of waypoints with their icons, proximity waypoints, routes, tracks, satellite almanacs, and real-time (NMEA and PVT) data.
Note: MacGPS Pro does not transfer maps to any GPS receiver. GPS receivers use vector-based maps for display on their screens. USGS DRG (Digital Raster Graphics) maps have too much detailed information for the memory and display capabilities of most hand-held GPS receivers. The best use of DRG maps, and the use which MacGPS Pro provides, is to use the map on your Macintosh screen. You can plan a trip by generating waypoints and routes to transfer to your receiver. You can use the map on your Mac screen in real time as you travel with the GPS receiver connected. After your trip, you can transfer tracks from the GPS to view where you went on the DRG map.
Receiver manufacturers provide their own software for transferring their vector maps into their receivers. Where indicated, Garmin supplies this cable with the receiver. Model USB to USB cable Required Keyspan USB to Serial Adapter Model Required Garmin Serial Port cable connects between the receiver and the Keyspan adapter Optional Garmin Serial Port cable with cigarette lighter power adapter.
