For a couple of years I've been using a portable Samsung Blu-ray writer connected to my Macbook via USB. In the last month or so it's been struggling to read Blu-ray discs and the Mac sometimes appears to be unhappy with it and I need to detach and reconnect a few times before it settles down. I thought I'd update the firmware this evening, or at least reload it, but simply cannot find any reference to it on the Samsung website. It's an extremely popular drive for users of newer Macs without built-in drives so I can't believe others haven't been here before. Can anyone point me at the place to download the firmware - or offer any other tips? It's the SE-56CB. I find it bewildering that I can't find it easily on the Samsung website.

It's a popular and currently available device. Looking back at my original post, firmware is the wrong word - I should probably be looking for something driver and Mac related. I didn't need to install anything when I first bought the device, I just plugged it in and it worked, but now every disc seems to result in SCSI errors and various problems reported as hardware failure. Can't rule out the drive itself is failing, but it's had very little use over the two years I've had it.

The white SE-506CB/RSWD Slim External Blu-ray Writer Drive by Samsung is useful when you want to create High Definition Blu-ray Movies, business presentations and more. The drive can read and write onto Blu-ray/DVD/CD media discs and supports single, dual, triple and quad layer BD-R discs. The lightweight and slim design is portable enough when you need to travel so you can watch Blu-ray movies or distribute large amounts of data onto Blu-ray Discs (up to 128GB). The SE-506CB/RSWD Slim External Blu-ray Writer Drive is connected and powered by an USB 2.0 cable. Lastly with 200ms access time and 4MB buffer memory you'll see less skips when accessing Blu-ray discs. Rated 5 out of 5 by Garrett P.

The samsung se 208ab external dvd drive is a suitable alternative to apples superdrive which is very overpriced. This DVD drive works really well for macbooks and netbooks or all in one computers. Sep 29, 2008  i just bought a samsung DVD writer super-writemaster for my G5 OS X(10.4.11) and put it in an external case and it doesnt work, on toast 9 it say's no recorder found please check cables and power, but it;s already connected and powered, when i open my system profiler to check my firewire all it says is ' Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec' (does this mean that) is there a driver that i need to.

From Works Great on Mac & Win 8 running in Virtual Box I can now watch & burn blu-rays on my 2008 mac pro running Yosemite with discreet Dolby dts 5.1 surround sound out the optical output. (make sure to enable digital pass-through in the blu-ray for mac player app or mac sound settings & that your audio receiver can decode dts).

I also can burn blu-rays from win 8 running in virtual box with no problems (I haven't tried to play a blu-ray in windows yet) I've been using this product for a few weeks & haven't had any problems with it. My mac will burn a disk with this device just fine.

However, I'm using ImgBurn to burn in windows & Blu-Ray Player App to play in mac because ImgBurn can burn a dts audio track. You can install ImgBurn in crossover or wine to run it on mac but getting crossover or wine to find this usb device is for the tech & code savvy only. After researching multiple products and reading lots of reviews it seemed that this burner was one of the top ones out there. I received it quickly (because B&H is just awesome) and decided to try it out by backing up my photography catalog to BD-R. The backup used 9 BD-R's and every single one burnt perfectly and pretty quickly (I used Toast for Mac).

At that point I was extremely happy with it. After a couple of months it was time to do another backup and when I inserted a BD-R (from the same spindle as before) the drive would not read the disc, so I tried another and then tried to play a BR movie.no luck. The drive spins and you can hear it trying to read it, but after about a minute it stops.

Before I bought this drive I read many other mixed reviews.some had problems exactly like mine and others had none at all. Now of course it's about 10 days past the warranty period, so I guess it's time to start looking for something else.

I hate having an $ paper weight that's practically brand new (still has the plastic on the top). Rated 1 out of 5 by Macdontworkwiththiswell from DON'T BUY if you have a MAC!!! This company is great but many many false places will review and say this device is the best for a Mac and this is NOT true. This device will barely function as a DVD player let alone all the other writing and Blueray features.

WASTE of MONEY!! No one should ever be allowed to say this is compatible with Mac as it is only maybe 15% compatible. If you have a PC this thing would likely be awesome.

I don't have one anymore so I can't review that part honestly. Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from Simple to setup, works on Macbook pro Works as per the specification. Have not tested the bluray writing capablities yet. I rented few bluray discs from redbox and they all worked fine. Just one USB cable and its simple to setup. OS X automatically detects the drive and no installation is needed. For the same price of an apple superdrive, you get this bluray writer. I would strongly recommend this. Also, this is a join venture production of Samsung and Toshiba.Just con so far, When we run bluray movies - just that the drive gets a little noisy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Anonymous from Amazing so far The product is easy to use and can be connected to any USB device that has a screen (i.e., a tablet, TV, etc.) in order to play Blu-rays. That was an added bonus I did not expect. It is very lightweight. I have only used it a handful of times so I cannot speak for its long term use.

I have used it about 7 - 8 times in the last two weeks. The only bad thing I could think of, is that it is so lightweight that it feels flimsy. Just don't drop it and you should be fine.
