After carefully re-reading the WinQual page describing the ways to join the program I learned that you could also sign your membership request using something called a Corporate Identifier. It was a cheaper, less capable digital certificate that could be used to sign the file and join the program. Mac OS Tiger introduced a new daemon. Using Forums > Off-Topic Posts (Do Not Post Here). Winqual For Macbook Pro
Hello, I was wondering, what software do you guys provide on SOFTWARE CENTER to your users? I'm going to rant for a second, so have me excused. We don't own our applications, the departments do. Resulting in 20-30 small samophlanges in 10 different versions per department for their specific research field. They generally don't cause issues, but they're a nightmare for government audits. The big problem is the big, expensive software that handles licensing and updates horribly.
ESRI has you install singular patches to resolve singular issues. If your researcher does not use the feature that the patch is intended to solve, it's recommended that you don't install the patch. ESRI has also left a bad taste in our researcher's mouthes. A new major version (xx.0) of ArcGIS is released and they see things crashing left and right. Resolved in the next minor version (xx.1). COMSOL is hella expensive and is licensed to the MAC adress. THE FUCKING MAC ADDRESS.:( At least I know, so I can spoof the address when they need their workstation upgraded.
But who else is supposed to know, and remember to jot down the MAC of the old NIC and change the MAC of the new NIC? Let's not forget Adobe, but at least we own the Acrobat licenses. Not the other ones - our PR department owns those. And only CS6 from 6 years ago. And each product in the CS6 suite in different quanitities. Yes, Adobe scammed the fuck out of us, but that was before I joined the team.
We never settled for a default browser, but just put all of them out there. Most of the young PhD students have a preferrence, and the senior researchers can't tell the difference. We havn't cracked down on Total Commander, but we plan to. Again, that's the senior crowd using those. IT uses Double Commander, an open source clone, but that's to get an elevated window so we can browse computers and shares. I put out some open source alternatives to common licensed applications in Software Center. Adoption is low, but that's expected.
Management has never been dragged in on this, as they're too busy finding out what we have in the first place. Then they're willing to enforce open source/free alternatives to simplify future audits.
Firefox Double Commander Password Safe Notepad Google Chrome Visio 2013 Visual Studio Code GIMP FileZilla EndNote X8 Irfanview Adobe Acrobat Pro VLC. We mostly just deploy applications to collections as 'Required' when requested aside from standard applications. We don't have much in Software Center as Available. It varies depending on the specific agency's requirements but it's usually only 1-5 apps at the most. The only one I can think of that is available to most people is Mozilla Firefox 52 ESR. The only reason it's not installed on every computer is because certificates need to be imported into Firefox for our web filtering software.
We might be testing Firefox 60 Enterprise since it has group policy support and we can import those certs automatically.
Lets just say, its amazing what google can do:-) I finally found a working copy of inf2cat.exe 'in the wild'. Thanks and no thanks to MS for making me download a curcial utility from 'somewhere on the internet' instead of getting it from them. If someone else needs this tool, everything needed is infact part of DriverHeavens 'Mobility Modder', a community developed program used to modify ATI Mobility drivers! Download the tool from. Inf2cat.exe and all required tools are in MobilityDotNET4.zip:-).
